Clanking Sounds When Turning On Heat
When the heating system is first turned on in fall, homeowners often hear a groaning noise. You should also hear a normal clicking and knocking with a baseboard hot-water system. However, the pump to the system should be silent. If you hear knocking located at the boiler itself, have a repairman take a look at it right away.
Scratching From Behind Walls
Have you ever heard strange noises coming from the attic? What about scratching coming from behind the wallpaper? This could mean you have mice, squirrels or raccoons in your home. As soon as you suspect the possibility of pests, set up traps for smaller rodents and call a pro for the larger intruders. You can prevent future problems by sealing up any entrances in your home.
Hissing Sound
If your home has gas, then that hissing noise could indicate a leak. You will often also smell gas in the event of a leak, but if you hear the noise near the gas meter or at a home’s outdoor gas post, vacate the premises immediately and call the gas company.
Bubbling Coming From The Water Heater
A hot water heater works like a pot of boiling water. Once the fire is lit, the water inside is heated until it is ready for use. Sediment tends to build up at the bottom of the tank. If you hear a strange crackling sound which comes from the sediment bubbling, this could be a sign that the tank might be prematurely failing. To help prevent this, flush out your hot water tank every few months.
Furnace Whistling
This could mean that your filter needs to be changed. You should change the filters on a monthly basis.
