Home buyers rely on home inspectors to help them with what is often their largest purchase and investment of their lives. If a home inspector fails to identify an issue, it can have homeowners spending thousands of dollars on unexpected costs.
Ontario is among one of many Canadian provinces and territories where anyone can be a home inspector regardless of whether or not they have completed any type of professional training.
Yet in most Canadian provinces and territories, including Ontario, anyone can call themselves a home inspector – regardless of whether or not they have completed any sort of professional training.
However, this may change in Ontario. The provincial government plans to introduce new legislation in order to regulate the home inspection industry some time this year.
Currently, British Columbia and Alberta are the only provinces that regulate the home inspection industry. In British Columbia, home inspectors can obtain a license by being recognized through one of few industry associations. The required educational standards may differ from one association to the next.
The provincial government in British Columbia states that it plans to bring a more strict licensing system for home inspectors in the year 2017. The B.C. government also has plans to implement a standard of conduct/practice that all inspections must comply with.
