Tula House, a residence located on Quadra Island in British Columbia is the Canadian building that is running to be named the world's best new building. The building was built by Patkau Architects.
For the first time, Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) will award an international prize for the most significant and inspiration building of the year. The award will be presented to the building that demonstrates visionary, innovative thinking and excellence of execution, while making a distinct contribution to its users and to its physical context.
The RIBA judges will be looking carefully at functional and context requirements, the way the buildings are built and how connected they are to the places in which they are built. The Tula house is intimately connected to its environment which could work in its favour.
The Tula House was constructed in 2014 and has already won a Governor General's Medal in architecture. The property is built at the edge of cliff, thirteen metres above the Pacific ocean and it was admired for its lightness of structure as well as its dynamic harmony with nature. The house is made of glass which brings light in and has gorgeous panoramic views.
Royal Institute of British Architects has selected thirty buildings from entries that came from fifty countries around the world. Some of these countries include: Portugal, Argentina, China, Ireland, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Spain, Vietnam, Singapore, Chile, Qatar, Norway, Peru, France, the US, Australia and more.
